Whether you are heading some where hot or somewhere cool, read this post to make your baby wearing journey go smoothly.

If you're familiar with my blog and our adventures, then I'm sure it comes as no surprise that we are huge fans of baby wearing. This versatile and practical solution is fantastic for providing comfort and closeness to your baby without disrupting your day. A common concern I come across when telling people about how convenient baby wearing is for travelling is the different climates they might be visiting. This is obviously a concern we had to consider when getting into baby wearing since we live in Canada. We knew we'd have hot summers and cold winters with spring and fall in between. It is still possible to babywear year round, and even only use one carrier. Keep reading for some tips on both climates!

Cooler Climates

If you're heading somewhere cold with your baby don't be discouraged, you can still babywear easily! If you don't already have a carrier and will only be using it somewhere cold then you can consider getting something warmer like a canvas one. If you already have a carrier, it's easy to make a few minor adjustments to keep your baby warm. My standard dressing advice for anyone heading into cold weather is to follow the rule of 3W, you'll want at least 3 layers - one for Wicking, one for Warmth and one for Wind. This is no different for your baby, depending on how cold it will be consider a base layer like merino wool, it's antibacterial and moisture wicking. Personally, we love to use footed pyjamas as a base layer to avoid pants riding up and exposing any skin, just make sure to size up so you don't squish their toes!

A hat, mittens and boots should never be forgotten while baby wearing in cool climates, just make sure their face and airway is never obstructed. You can also purchase an insulated baby carrier cover to help protect your baby.

Hotter Climates

If you're heading somewhere hot with your baby, it's actually a lot easier to baby wear than in the cold. It's much easier and more comfortable to wear less layers than it is to bundle up. We choose to purchase a mesh carrier, the Lillebaby Airflow because we knew we'd visit a lot of hot places and it would come in handy. You'll want to dress your baby in breathable clothes, we often only did a onesie, and of course a sun hat! Our family doctor advised always putting sunscreen on his legs since they'd be exposed and taking breaks in the sun as needed. One of the biggest perks of baby wearing in hotter climates is the ease of breastfeeding on the go. I find that by loosening the shoulder straps, he'd drop low enough to nurse on the go.

All Climates

If you'll be visiting somewhere hot and some where cold, or perhaps you're like us and live somewhere with a variety of seasons that require attiring your baby differently all year then here's what you should consider.

  • You can add a blanket inside a mesh carrier for extra warmth

  • You can purchase an insulated carrier cover for extra warmth

  • There are all season carriers that transition from a canvas layer to mesh under

  • Consider buying second hand so you can have one for each season

  • Always size up footed pyjamas so you don't squish the baby's toes

Regardless of the temperature, baby wearing is great for bonding and allows for hands-free exploration. An ergonomic carrier can combine both comfort and style, letting you continue your adventures with your little one!
