Parc national de la Gaspésie

Updated: Sep 27, 2021

Yesterday we planned on doing Mont Jacques Cartier which is supposed to be full of caribou. It was quite foggy when we got up but we were hoping for the best.

We got to the visitors centre to ask them about doing the trail. There’s no parking lot for it, you either have to access it by another trail or take their bus. Unfortunately, the woman told us that with the weather it wasn’t worth doing (and wouldn’t be the next day either). She recommended a shorter trail, but we’d done that doing the full Mont Albert and then she recommended Mont Xalibu which we’d also done. I mentioned that we’d been hoping to see animals so she suggested Mont Ernest Laforce. It’s a shorter trail, only 4.6km but good for seeing moose. We were pretty tired and sore from the last few days so we thought that was a good idea.

It was a much easier trail than the others but that also meant a little less scenic. I could tell by the forest that lots of moose lived there but we still didn’t see any. So far we’ve only seen one seal way out in the water, a deer, and two groundhogs at our campsite.

After the hike we drove to Forillon where we’ll be for two nights. There were lots of scenic viewpoints but it was still too foggy to see anything.

It was raining quite a bit when we got to camp so we quickly set up the tent and ventured into town for dinner. On the way out of the campground we noticed a games room so we stopped in town for some local beer and went back to play games.
