Gates of Hell

Updated: Sep 1, 2021

I had meant to post my last post Sunday night but didn’t end up posting until Monday morning. So this is actually the post about Sunday.

This campground was a little strange. The bathrooms were all locked and we had one key for the padlocks. It was kind of annoying cuz we had to either go all together or wait around. The showers were also coin operated, 25 cents for 2 minutes. I can’t say I’ve ever stayed anywhere that charged for the showers. The locking didn’t really make sense since the campground was huge and I don’t know who would be sneaking in to use them.

Pitter patter pitter patter, woke up to the sound of rain. Unfortunately, I am notorious for not pegging out my tent. Normally I’m alone and off in the woods and can’t peg it anyways. Thankfully we weren’t really wet up the edges of the tent were. We voted to bring a pile of snacks into the tent and play some games instead of packing up right away. We dozed off a little and by the time we got up, the camp ground was pretty empty.

We didn’t hit the road until almost 11 and it was still raining off and on. We went to les Portes-de-L’Enfer (gates of hell). It’s a long canyon with a river and lots of hiking trails. There was a waterfall and a suspension bridge but we mostly went so we could say we’d been to hell and back.

The rain had mostly cleared up when we got there but it was really humid. The bugs were awful as well and we emptied one of my bug sprays.

We walked along the canyon to check out the waterfall and then entered their interactive exhibit. We weren’t totally sure what to expect since we chose the place based on the name but it was super cool. They had a little beaver lodge with a throne for the King Beaver.

They also had a lot of motion sensor speakers and lights to create an interesting atmosphere. It was super interactive and hands on which was cool. shame and I have often been matching on our hikes, it seems we gravitate to the same colours. So we gave Kat a jacket so we could all coordinate.

After that we went to the labyrinth de Secrets which was an app guided maze. We had to scan things with our phone and then answer questions or do activities. We quickly got bored of that as it was very child oriented and took one of the exits.

We went up to do another trail that was famous for its 300 steps down into the canyon. We tried to see another waterfall on the way but the signs didn’t have the right distances on them so it didn’t work out. The walk down the canyon was cool since the stairs were built right on the river.

However, they lied. There was 302 steps.

After this we decided to treat ourselves to dinner since we didn’t have real meals that day. We looked up a place we’d remembered seeing in Rimouski and headed that direction. On the way we decided to call, thinking ordering for pick up would be faster. They told us that they weren’t offering take out at that time to better serve in restaurant patrons. We decided we’d go in and sit down then. However, when we got there we found out you had to have reservations.

We continued on and found a little canteen and decided to eat there. It was a good choice since it seemed much more like a local joint and not a tourist spot.

We set the tent up at the new campsite and made sure to peg it out well so it would dry well. However, it was still raining so we made sure to stay close together in the middle to stay warm and dry.
