Whether it's your first visit or your twentieth, here are some fun ways to explore Montreal in the winter.

Montreal is a popular destination for many, known for it's European-like charm, delicious foods, and rich Canadian history. Don't worry if you don't speak French as the city's bilingualism (a mix of French and English) adds to its unique identity, creating an inclusive atmosphere for residents and visitors alike.

Founded in 1642 as Ville-Marie this city was originally a missionary colony. If you're not familiar with Canada's history, the Jesuit priests established many colonies throughout the region. Ville-Marie grew into a thriving trading and cultural center and is now one of Canada's largest cities.

Le Vieux-Port de Montreal

Vieux-Port or the Old Port is a great place to visit no matter the time of the year. You can see the clock tower, visit the science center, grab a photo at the Bonjour Montreal or J'aime Montreal signs, and of course take a ride on the iconic La Grand Roue. Make sure to peep across the canal at Habitat 67, a unique apartment building built in honour of Expo 67! If you want to pamper yourself, warm up or just have a unique experience then you can consider visiting the Bota Bota spa while here. This one of a kind spa is actually on a boat! Their claim to fame is their tubs, not only do they have multiple hot tubs, but they also have cold plunge pools available. Cold plunge pools are becoming increasingly more popular and are based on the Scandinavian therapeutic tradition.

Boulangerie/Patisserie

The first food that comes to mind when you think of Montreal is probably poutine. Of course, while you are here you should try the delicious fries with melted cheese curds and hot gravy. However, I hope bakeries also come to mind since Montreal is known for its European vibe which includes amazing pastries. I would recommend visiting L'Amour du Pain in Maison Pepin, a quirky furniture store. They also have a terrace on the alley beside them which they decorate for Christmas giving you an opportunity to take some fun winter photos. Some other cafes to consider are; Boulangerie Habib, La Copette

or Premiere Moisson a local bakery chain.

Cross-Country Skiing

One of the reasons I chose to move to Montreal was because it is a very active and vibrant city. There are many places to cross-country ski, skate and snowshoe right in the heart of the city. If you are just visiting and don't have access to a car then I would recommend going to Mount Royal where there is an option to rent snowshoes, skates and skis. However, if you do have access to a car then you can look a little bit further out. There are two provincial parks that offer ski rental on well groomed trails. If you are more of a beginner than I would recommend Oka as the trails are flatter, if you're a little bit more experienced then you can consider Saint Bruno. Make sure to buy your day pass and phone in advance for the rentals!

Photo Shoots

Did you even take a trip if you don't post it on social media these days? Montreal has some really great and iconic places to get the perfect Instagram photo. Here are the places I mentioned above in the Old Port :

  • Bonjour Montreal Sign

  • Je t'aime Montreal Sign

  • La Grand Roue

  • the Clock Tower

  • Habitat 67

And here are some others for you to consider:

  • Promenade Wellington

  • Mont Royal Look Off

  • St. Joseph's Oratory

  • Maison Birks Door

  • Notre-Dame Basilica

  • The Biosphere & arc Jean-Drapeau

  • Orange Julep

Bonus: Christmas Markets

Going to the markets at night lets you enjoy the lights

Obviously, this one is not available all winter and I am posting past when you can go this year. However, if you happen to be in Montreal pre-Christmas then I would recommend you check out some of our magical Christmas markets. Marche Jean Talon has a big recognition here since it was the first market, however it's not the one I would recommend. My favorite is Atwater, I love visiting this market no matter what time of the year. From the fromagerie, the chocolatier, and all the bakeries, it's a delicious treat. Set right on the Lachine Canal which has historical importance here for the fur trade, this canal was built to help transport the pelts. At Christmas, they turn one of the pavilions into the market. You can wander through and purchase local goods for gifts, eat some poutine, drink hot drinks and enjoy the Christmas ambience.
