Parc national du Fjord-du-Saguenay

Updated: Oct 7, 2021

For the long weekend, some friends and I booked an airbnb along the Fjord du Saguenay and planned some exploring. We all got off work early on Friday so we could drive up that night and not waste the weekend. This was the first road trip in a long time that not only was I not alone but someone else was driving! Fred has a hybrid suv (with air conditioning) so he was the driver. A perk of someone else driving is more time to hang out with Thor!

The drive took probably around 6 hours, thankfully traffic getting out of the city wasn't too bad. We got a little lost finding the airbnb and were late for curfew but the streets were absolutely empty. We didn't do anything exciting Friday night since there was the curfew but planned an early morning. We decided to do the longest trail first to get it out of the way and have more time to relax. Montagne Blanche was a 14km out and back trail with reviews of how stunning the summit was.

Kat and I made sure to pack our frog nets in case we saw any little friends. The boys didn’t seem super keen on this idea though.

The day started off crazy humid, I'm definitely not used to that kind of heat anymore. The hike was on the harder side since we spent most of it going up but it was scenic. There were a lot of look offs and waterfalls to take breaks at. We didn’t encounter a whole lot of people on the way in until the top.

Kat and I were on the lookout for a moose, after camping last weekend and seeing the fresh tracks we were pretty keen. We had also decided that if we saw one, we would get moose tattoos. The boys wanted nothing to do with that deal.

It took about 3 hours to get to the top and the summit was definitely worth the hike up.

We stopped for a lunch break there and to cool off. Fred had brought binoculars, so I spent some time looking for a moose or whale but had no luck. The belugas and whales are quite common in the fjord starting in May but it's not the best time to see them. Unfortunately, none of the whale watching tours were even open for the season yet.

The hike back down was way faster since we weren’t stopping for photos. We ran into a lot more people on the way down and I was happy we had started early. I also don’t know how they were starting the hike in that heat. I was starting to wish there was a lake we could jump into.

When we got back to the car, Kat and I noticed that there was a field of cows so we went over to say hi. The boys didn’t feel the need to make new friends.

Since we finished our hike pretty early we decided to check out some other scenic spots. The parc is huge and has multiple entrances and we were barely exploring it. I’m going to have to go back to go to different parts of it.

We hit up a little grocery store for some ice cream, wine and dinner fixings. Unfortunately, they had very little in the ways of groceries so we had to find another. We were way out in small towns, there wasn’t a “real” grocery store for at least an hour. We checked out the one closer to our Airbnb and it had a lot more selection. You could tell we were getting hungry from the hike though and we started buying everything we saw that was appealing to us.

The Airbnb was super well stocked, it had every little thing we could need so we had a big bbq feast.

After dinner we walked down to the river behind the house, we had hoped it would be okay for swimming. Unfortunately, the current was a little strong, and the water a little cold. It was pretty watching the colours of the sunset so we made plans to find a good spot on the water to properly watch it the next night.
