Whether you're preparing for the trip of a lifetime, backpacking with friends, or just on a short vacation, read this budget breakdown to plan for your trip to Japan.

9 Days
(November 15-23)
2 Cities Stayed in
(Tokyo, Kyoto)
3 Cities Visited
(Hakone)
205CAD per day
*Please note all costs are the total for two adults and one baby.
Transportation: 381CAD
Our transportation for our time in Japan included our flight from Canada (Read this post about why it was so cheap!), metro passes in Tokyo & Kyoto, the train from Tokyo to Hakone and back, the train from Tokyo to Hakone and getting to and from the airport.

Food & Drinks: 305CAD
You'll want to carry cash with you every day to ensure you can enjoy all the amazing street food Japan has to offer. The number one food I recommend you try here, and this was really hard to pick as there's so many good ones, would be Takoyaki balls! Don't be deterred by the fact that they're made from octopus, they're divine.
Accommodations: 616CAD
We stayed at a hotel in the Shibuya district of Tokyo, it was close to a metro which is key for exploring this city. Finding accommodations in Kyoto was harder and we ended up booking a small Airbnb that had a washing machine, but no Wi-Fi!
Attractions & Activities: 259CAD
Visiting temples and gardens is where you will probably spend the majority of your money, they aren't terribly expensive on their own, but it can add up fast. Our most expensive activity was our Hakone Pass which allowed us to experience almost everything this area had to offer.

Extras: 280CAD
This one doesn't get a very good breakdown, since this was our first city we didn't keep very good track of our cash spending so this is could have been food, temples or metro tickets.
Must See/Do:
Arashiyama Bamboo Grove
Kiyomizu-dera Temple
Eikan-do Temple
Takeshita Street
Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden
Hakone Open Air Museum
